In construction, a building or structure is waterproofed with the use of membranes and coatings to protect contents underneath or within as well as protecting structural integrity.
Integral systems work within the matrix of a concrete structure, giving the concrete itself a waterproof quality. There are two main types of integral waterproofing systems: the hydrophilic and the hydrophobic systems.
- A hydrophilic system typically uses a crystallization technology that replaces the water in the concrete with insoluble crystals. Various brands available in the market claim similar properties, but not all can react with a wide range of cement hydration by-products, and thus require caution.
- Hydrophobic systems use fatty acids to block pores within the concrete, preventing water passage.

Acrylic Waterproofing System
The Acrylseal system consists of a combination of Acrylseal Waterproofer, and Acrylseal Membrane.

Application of the Acrylseal system is simple. However, before starting, one should ensure that the area to be waterproofed is sound, stable, and free of detritus, oil, or any other substance that may prevent the system from achieving a good bond to the substrate.
The Acrylseal Waterproofer is first applied to the surface to be waterproofed. The Acrylseal Membrane is then applied immediately onto the wet Acrylseal Liquid. Once the Acrylseal Liquid has dried (2-24 hours, depending on weather conditions) a second coat of Acrylseal Liquid should be applied over the Acrylseal Membrane.
Torch-on Membrane is a bitumen-based waterproofing product which is heat-fused to underlying substrates. It is sold in a variety of thicknesses with single or dual re-enforcement with polyester or fiber glass.
Typical uses are the waterproofing of:
- Roof slabs

- Foundation walls
- Retaining walls
Surfaces must be sound, clean and free from any contaminants and primed with one coat of Bitumen Primer prior to the application of the torch-on membrane. Once cooled, the membrane should be protected with 2 coats of Bitumen Aluminium Paint for UV protection or covered with a screed and tiling.
